Living UNDONE

Director Statement

I am a new director and while this story is not entirely unique, I’m obsessed with storytelling that informs and provokes beyond the veil of what simply feels good in the moment and what might sell well for a day or two. Good storytelling is effective and powerful – It can change the human experience and the course of time itself.

While I am the Director on this film, I consider this project to be a co-creation with everyone involved. Collectively, we are a group of award-winning filmmakers, citizens, change makers, formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as currently incarcerated individuals, committed to telling stories of individuals and families who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system and the lifelong digital punishment that follows incarceration.

As effective and powerful storytellers, we are courageous. We are willing to rock the boat and challenge the status quo. We worked with, and consulted with, both Democrats and Republicans who are committed to criminal justice reform. Proof that unity is possible.

We follow facts and do not languish or slowdown in fear of repercussions. We are resolute in our pursuit of truth and uncovering this for all to see. We have been examining these systems for some time now and are marching bravely into the eye of the problem. We hope to eliminate it and the prospect of it reappearing later in history. The bigger and darker the problem, the more appealing it is to us.

This project engages the lives and deeply sensitive stories of humans who could otherwise be well resigned that society
has given up on them and on people – irrespective of color or class – who can be relegated to the pile of “them”. This is the beginning of a bold experiment whose time has come, fleeting albeit as the urgency of now dissipates into the reactionist horizon. It is
the hope of the entire Living UN DONE family, that viewers will embrace the intent and carefully gathered substance of
this work, and promote it with zest-driven support and resources.

These stories are screaming to be told and the time
to do that is now.
