Addiction stories typically focus on the person who suffers directly from substance use. I wanted to circle around and look at the devastation from the point of view of loved ones, and especially parents. Marcus and Denise have been happily married for 30 years. Well, almost happily married. Can they overcome the one thing that just might tear them apart? They both love Danny, but what happens when parents have radically different takes on what it means to love an adult child? And how do we — the audience — bring ourselves to the story as we journey with them through their different takes on the same pain.
