It’s Hard Not to be Romantic About Time Travel
Armed with weed and a half-baked theory that love can bend time, two friends land five years in the past, totally unprepared for what comes next.
TRAILER
Michael sees the movie theater as a place where traditions are subverted–where the status quo gets turned on its head. And this is where his writing sensibilities lie–in taking an established concept or idea and finding a way to turn it into something different. From slasher films where the “sexy” girls are the most competent ones to a rom-com where the meet cute takes place during casting for a snuff film, there’s no trope he’s unwilling to push to its limit.
Michael’s written more than a dozen feature films (and produced four of them) as well as written and produced a series of successful shorts. Michael has had several feature scripts both place as finalists and win in festivals and has had multiple short films win awards in recent years, including several that took top honors.
Like all the best ideas throughout history, this one came to me while I was high. Normally when this happens i write a bunch of notes and then look at them the next day and I wonder what the hell I was thinking. But this time I realized I might actually be onto something.
I’ve always loved playing with genre and tropes, twisting expectations just enough to make something feel fresh. This film is no exception. I wanted to poke fun at the overly earnest world of romantic time travel movies… by making one myself.
This short is a proof of concept for a feature, a story about love overcoming anger, about pushing past resentment, and finding a way forward. And yes, it’s also about two best friends getting high and traveling through time.
It’s full of absurd concepts, sharp dialogue, and ridiculous villains… but at its heart, it’s still a love story. Just not the kind with violins and sunsets. The kind with edibles, chaos, and maybe one or two moments of accidental clarity.
