The Book Club

The Book Club

“A woman is invited to be a part of a book club….but it soon becomes clear that the women in this club are more than they appear to be.”

Lucy, a woman isolated by her abusive partner, is befriended by the kind Esme, who invites Lucy to join her and a small group of women friends for tea and fellowship. Risking the ire of her partner, she accepts the invitation. What follows is a wild and unexpected ride that has been described by one reviewer as “Steel Magnolias meets I Spit on Your Grave.”

Part feminist revenge fantasy, part love letter to the bonds of female friendship, the message is clear: don’t expect patriarchy to solve problems that patriarchy itself created. The Book Club tells a story about the strength that can only be found in community, with an unexpected and satisfying twist that speaks directly to the defiance and rage of the current moment.

TRAILER

Director Biography – Johnnie Brannon

I’m an award-winning Actor/Producer/Filmmaker based out of Little Rock, Arkansas. I’m also the co-director of the Rock City Film Festival.

I’ve produced and directed 13 narrative short films, many participating and winning various awards over the years. My most recent film, The Book Club kicked off its festival run in 2024.

I’m a big fan of dark comedy and horror and I enjoy telling stories in which ordinary people get caught up in extraordinary situations. Some of my favorite filmmakers that inspire me are David Lynch, John Carpenter and Yargos Lanthimos.

Director Statement

The Book Club is absolutely my favorite and as of now, the best thing I’ve directed in my short career as a filmmaker. Showcasing the talent of these women and telling a horrific story of domestic abuse in a different light was very important to me and the Writer/Producer and my partner, Kerri Michael. We hope you enjoy this film as much as we have in creating it. Get ready for a wild ride. Thank you.
