Director Statement

Being the youngest of three, I’ve had the privilege of growing up with two older brothers. With this privilege, I’ve heard the phrase “you’re smacking” at the dinner table an unfathomable amount of times. Sometimes, as a kid, I would smack on my food at the dinner table on purpose purely to annoy my brothers.

I’ve lived 21 years with two older brothers, and from these experiences, I’ve had many emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, rage, admiration, annoyance, exasperation, love, competitiveness — all of the above. But most importantly, no matter the circumstance, there’s always that unconditional love for them and my family.

Therefore, “yer smackin” was born out of these experiences. This heartfelt comedy has deep roots in my personal life as the story is inspired by instances that have actually happened to either myself or a family member. I wanted to tell a sincere yet comedic story about the relationship between a pair of siblings, similar to my own story.

Music and nostalgia are central themes in all my films, as they resonate with me deeply both as a filmmaker and as a movie-goer. “yer smackin” embodies these traits while also incorporating quirky humor, family dynamics, and everlasting familial love.
